Fixed Wire Testing — common questions
What's the difference between fixed wire testing and an EICR?
Practically none — they're the same inspection. 'EICR' is the name of the report and the term used in domestic and landlord contexts; 'fixed wire testing' is what the same job is usually called on commercial and industrial sites. Both are periodic inspection and testing of the fixed installation to BS 7671.
How often do we need it?
Commonly every five years for offices and shops, every three for industrial premises, and annually for higher-risk environments. Licensed premises and some insurers set their own interval. We'll confirm the right cycle for your building and tell you the recommended next test date on the certificate.
Does the whole building need to shut down?
No. On most sites we test in phases so only one board or one area is isolated at a time, and we can work evenings or weekends. We agree the phasing before we start so you know exactly what's off and when.
What happens if it fails?
A report is unsatisfactory if it contains a C1 or C2. You get a schedule of every finding with its code and a priced remedial quote, prioritised so you can deal with the dangerous items first. Once the C1s and C2s are cleared we re-issue the report as satisfactory.
